The Project
A Southafrican - inspired retreat in Sitges
INTERIOR DESIGN & REFURBISHMENT
In the picturesque coastal village of Sitges, Barcelona, lies the vibrant second home of a London-based family of five. With roots in both Sri Lanka and London, this well-traveled family found particular inspiration in the three years they spent in Cape Town, South Africa, during their early thirties.
They adored how South African homes were designed for "entertainment" and embraced natural, neutral color palettes with joyful pops of color. Our mission was to infuse these cherished memories into their Sitges residence.
In close collaboration with the family, we embarked on a comprehensive interior design project to transform this second home into a warm, minimalistic family retreat with distinct references to South Africa.

We began by embracing a concept of quiet luxury, starting with a foundational element: replacing the shiny original floors with a vinyl collection that mimics natural brushed wood, instantly providing warmth and sophistication. We then crafted a warm, nature-inspired, and timeless kitchen. This space features straight-line walnut doors, tall cabinets for maximum storage, an integrated range hood, and a beautiful Calacatta Gold porcelain worktop that gives the room its unique personality, highlighted by LED lighting in the upper cabinets. A charming breakfast nook with a bold pattern wallpaper adds a delightful touch. The open-concept living and dining room, light and airy, creates a sense of community, perfect for welcoming family and guests. We introduced coziness through additional seating and subtle wall lamps. One of our most distinctive approaches was color drenching the walls, ceiling, doors, and frames, which made the apartment feel remarkably larger and taller. This effect, coupled with wall-to-wall, perfectly draped wave curtains, truly elevated the entire space. The master suite bedroom was transformed into a tropical, exotic parents' retreat. While maintaining a serene atmosphere, we introduced visual interest with a bespoke, earthy ochre headboard, layered with Pooky reading lamps for an extra touch of color. We completely redesigned the wardrobes, both inside and out, bringing in timeless elegance with mid-century inspired wooden doors crafted from bespoke natural walnut, featuring creamy interiors with LED lights. The room was further personalized with beautiful hand-painted silks, previously owned by the client, which we custom-framed to accentuate the art. Even though it's compact, the master suite bathroom became incredibly functional and spacious, boasting a wet-floor shower, a double vanity, a suspended WC, and a luxurious feel achieved through carefully selected stone finishes and brushed brass fixtures. The color palette remained earthy and sophisticated. The family bathroom, despite lacking windows, was brought to life with a wall-to-wall shower niche illuminated by warm LED light. The shower, also featuring a wet floor and a wall-to-wall sliding screen, became a luxurious escape. All three bedrooms were significantly upgraded with new wardrobes, bespoke headboards personalized through shape and fabric, ceiling fans, and wall lamps. These spaces were further enhanced by personal art statements made by the children, custom-framed to highlight their creations. To extend the concept of quiet luxury, we selected brushed bronze door handles, specifically chosen to avoid the ostentatious appearance that shiny finishes can sometimes present. In summary, this apartment in Sitges beautifully represents a fusion of South African inspiration, evident in the material selections, with a classic-modern style. It has been meticulously designed to be a nature-inspired family retreat on Barcelona's picturesque coast.
